In consultation with a referring physician, a Pedorthist evaluates a patient to assist in the creation of a prescription for specialized footwear, shoe modification, and foot orthoses. An evaluation of foot anatomy and pathology, biomechanics and gait is completed prior to an individualized recommendation for treatment.
Diabetic Footwear
A majority of the pedorthic patients at RPI are diabetic. Diabetic feet require a specific regimine of care that includes foresight in a proactive approach to care. Pedorthists are trained in what types of problems are likely to occur in the diabetic foot and recommend foot orthoses and modifications to prevent potential problems. Proper footwear, modifications and foot care can often make the difference in saving the limb and avoiding amputation. Pedorthists play a major role in assisting these types of patients.
